If you are at all curious about what the Chinese are thinking about and planning to do next on the world stage, you could do worse than read the book “Wild Swans, Three Daughters of China” by Jung Chang.

Because Ms. Chang also wrote “Mao: The Unknown Story” and is a truly gifted writer, you could tackle that one, also, but if your curiosity about China is pretty much COVID-19-centered and immediate, I can think of no better primer for the how and why of Chinese history, culture, governance structure and society than this thriller-like true story of a Chinese grandmother, daughter and granddaughter.
