Farmer escapes tractor fire

Local farmer Derek Roever, 20, was unharmed after he jumped out of a tractor that caught fire May 19. Roever’s grandmother, Elaine Roever, said Derek was cultivating a field southeast of Home City in an International 5288 tractor when he looked back to check the cultivator, turned around and saw flames shooting from under the hood near the windshield. Elaine said he stopped and shut off the engine and baled out. “When he hit the ground, the windshield blew out,” Elaine said. Beattie/Home City Fire Department responded, as did neighbors and friends. The tractor was destroyed and the cause of the blaze unknown.
