Rocky Mountain elk

Elk that have moved north from Fort Riley have been seen and hunted in Marshall County. The elk were introduced to Fort Riley for research purposes.

Reports of Rocky Mountain elk spotted in Marshall County are increasing, wildlife officials say.

“They are around here, mainly in the southern part of the county,” said Megan Smith, wildlife biologist tech with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism office in Blue Rapids. “Elk are in the areas between Blue Rapids and Frankfort and even in the Home City area. Some have been seen in southern Washington County.”
