The city of Blue Rapids has established an operations center in the city office and is encouraging residents to use it if necessary.

“The operations center will serve as a central point of information and pass on any needs to individuals and organizations that can satisfy the request,” said Blue Rapids Mayor Jerry Zayas.

The office phone number is 785-363-7736. Public access will be limited to the office, and residents are asked to pay their water bills online or in the drop box.

“We have come to the realization that we will overwhelm our health care system within a short period of time, considering we only have 25 hospital beds, not to mention ventilators,” Zayas said. “Triage decisions will have to be made. . .This is serious, and unless we do something now to slow the spread of the virus it will only get worse. There is no need to panic, but we must undertake prudent measures.”

The Blue Rapids Community Center and library are closed, and water disconnections have been discontinued until further notice.

Municipal court is postponed until May. Dog and cat licensing has been extended until April 30.

The bank and convenience stores, which sell fuel, will remain open.

The On Target Bull Sale will be held as scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds.

“We are asking for everyone’s cooperation during these times. The longer we stay hunkered down, the shorter our tempers will become,” Zayas said. “We need to be positive and proactive, and more importantly be good neighbors. We have been through worse and we will get through this.”
