District play

Hanover lineman Tanner Link, No. 80, tackles Axtell quarterback Isaac Detweiler during the first half of Friday’s district showdown between the top two ranked eight-man Division II football teams.

Against the odds, second-ranked Axtell won Friday’s district game against top-ranked Hanover with persistence and perseverance.

The Eagles weren’t favored — not with 11 players suited up, two on the bench — one with a broken hand and the other done for the season with a broken collar bone. Then midway into the first quarter, Axtell coaches Eric Detweiler and Craig Wiebe were scrambling. Their All-State quarterback Quinn Buessing was on the sideline with a possible concussion, which meant he was done for the game. Quite possibly he’s out for this Friday’s game against visiting Frankfort, a team like Axtell that is undefeated and a contender to win the district. Frankfort won 54-20 in a non-district game at St. John’s/Tipton in Beloit to hit 6-0.
