Marshall County corrections officer Derek Martin says that when he attempts to deal with uncooperative inmates he must be extra careful because of two issues that arise from working in Marshall County’s outdated jail: a narrow, linear hallway lined with cells and the keys in his pocket.

Martin spoke during a forum at Blue Rapids Community Center Dec. 4 about plans for a new jail. He said the jail’s narrow hallways and antiquated design create scenarios that are ideal for inmates to ambush a corrections officer.
