Birders with binoculars

A group looks skyward Saturday at the start of a frosty Walk and Talk about fall birds. The Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan sponsored the activity.

Early Saturday’s freezing temperatures didn’t hinder a group of about 20 people from taking a hike through the woods of Fairmont Park on Manhattan’s southern edge. They wanted to see and learn about fall migratory birds with local birding specialist Chuck Otte, a Geary County Extension agent.

Otte, who regularly leads bird walks at Milford State Lake, had extra binoculars to share as he pulled several pairs from a bag and handed them to the university students and area residents.
