Medicare for all: The cost of health care, which blocks many Americans from getting medical attention when they need it, and the viability of our community hospitals is at stake. Congress must begin in earnest to study the future of these issues and determine how to pay for a universal system of health insurance paid through our federal government.
The current patchwork system is unsustainable and unable to control costs, particularly for pharmaceuticals. Single-payer programs, where the government administers health care and negotiates prescription drug prices, are the only way developed countries, except the United States, have managed to improve public health and assure all ages have access to care. Granted they have challenges, too, but the severity of America’s health-care crisis towers over them.
