Owen Matthew DeMars

Owen Matthew DeMars, the son of David L. DeMars and Bailey Marie McMillan, was stillborn Dec. 31, 2010, at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan. He was born at 2:58 a.m. and was 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 22 inches long.

Survivors include his parents of St. George; grandparents Kurt and Teresa McMillan, Home City, and Fred and Kitty DeMars, St. Marys; and great-grandparents Quentin McMillan, Home City, and Marjorie Schlegel, Manhattan.


Private family services will be at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Vernon L. Graham

Vernon Leland Graham, 92, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at the Washington County Hospital, Washington.

Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.


A service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The Rev. Judy Hill will officiate.

Burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established and may given in care of Ward Funeral Home.

Vernon Leland Graham was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Mahaska, the second son to Clarence Milton Graham and Josephine Tuma Graham. While Vernon and his brother, Avery, were still quite young, their mother died and the family moved to Fairbury, Neb. Their father married Ethel Fentiman Robertson, and they had a daughter. Harlene Alice.

Vernon and Avery batched together in an old log cabin near Endicott, and both worked at the Endicott Brick Yard, which is now Endicott Clay Products. They took several trips together in their Model A Ford. They visited Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, working as they traveled.

Vernon taught himself the guitar and harmonica and played in the dance band named Gentleman Jack and the Westerners for a number of years. He was a rodeo participant and won first place often in steer riding and bareback bronco riding.

Vernon was married on Feb. 6, 1940, at age 21 to Velma Marie Schutte, Linn. He worked on and off at the Endicott Brick Yard. His last stint there was from November 1973 until his retirement in September 1990.

They lived in Endicott, Steel City, Burchard and Washington, usually on farms. He raised cattle, sheep, Shetland ponies and had a large collection of exotic birds. He and Velma enjoyed their dogs and had an internationally prized collection of iris flowers. Their last residence together was in Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother; wife; brother; stepbrothers Lynn, Ivan and Fritz Robertson.

Survivors include his half-sister, Harlene Hellbush, and other relatives.

Leland R. Holle

Leland R. Holle, 75, Bremen, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville.

A service was at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bremen. The Rev. Jack Kirk officiated. Kathy Pralle was the organist. The church choir sang “What a Friend We Have In Jesus,” and the congregation sang “Joy to the World,” “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Jesus Savior Pilot Me.”

Burial was in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Bremen. Pallbearers were Colin Laws, Alex Holle, Travis Holle, Doug Drey, Terry Holle and Garrett Holle.

Leland Holle was born Dec. 3, 1935, at Bremen, the son of Richard F. and Anne Meyer Holle. He was confirmed on April 10, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School.

He was involved in organic farming, worked at the Bremen co-op and ran the township maintainer.

He married Marcile Kuhlman Oct. 11, 1959, at Linn.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the church choir, Lutheran Layman League, National Farmers Organization and Kansas Organic Producers. He was also the co-president of the Low German Heritage Society of Marshall and Washington counties and a member of the Kansas National Guard.

Survivors include his wife; sons Rick Holle, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Dennis Holle, Chandler, Ariz.; daughters Glenda Brown and Janece Garcia, both of Houston, Texas; brothers Verlin Holle, Hallam, Neb., Lennis Holle, Marysville, and Oren Holle, Bremen; a sister, Nila Koeneke, Lincoln; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials will be designated later and can be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville.

Russell D. Kalous

Russell D. Kalous, 73, Waterville, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at Community Memorial Hospital, Marysville.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Waterville, with the Rev. Jeremie Vore officiating. Soloist Kim Oatney sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art,” accompanied on the organ by Lois Andersen.

Casket bearers were Tim Kampsen, Caleb Kampsen, Don Stryker, Ronnie Mann, Jonathan Oatney and Richard Hawley. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.

Russell Kalous was born April 25, 1937, at Odell, Neb., to Charles F. and Viola R. Buell Kalous. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1955 and then worked for Tuttle Creek and Marshall County.

He served in the Kansas National Guard.

He retired from Georgia Pacific Gypsum after 25 years.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed time with family and friends and enjoyed plowing neighbors’ and friends’ gardens.

Survivors include three brothers, Charles L. Kalous, Jackson, Miss., Larry K. Kalous, Tallahassee, Fla., and Duane K. “Butch” Kalous, Derby.

Memorials can be made to the Waterville Preservation Society for the Opera House restoration and sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home.

Dale E. Laflen

Dale E. Laflen, 82, Marysville, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Community Memorial Healthcare.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marysville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville. The family will receive guests from 5 to 7 p.m.

Burial will be in Marysville City Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later by the family.

Edwin G. Loebsack

Edwin G. “Eddie” Loebsack, 86, Wichita, died Dec. 25, 2010. Funeral service was at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita.

He was a lifetime resident of Wichita. After graduating in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served as a pilot and was a WWII veteran. Later, he attended Wichita State University.

In 1956, Eddie started Building Spec & Equipment until he retired in 1987.

He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago White Sox.

He and wife, Jane, traveled to many destinations.

He was preceded in death by wife, Jane Beth, and daughter, Dedra Ann.

He is survived by daughters Jenae Clay of Wichita and Randy Stech of Marysville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Holt of Orange County, Calif.

A memorial has been established with American Heart Association.

Mary Meade

Mary Meade, Centralia, lost her hard-fought battle to cancer on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning.  The Rev. Arul Carasala celebrated the Mass.

A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.  Visitation was at the Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Casket bearers were Doug Thompson, Dusty Thompson, Scott Meade, Tristan Meade, Cody Meade, Tyler Meade, Dylan Meade, Brent Ronnebaum, Nick Williams, Dustin Elliott and Austin Elliott.  Burial was in the Coal Creek Cemetery, south of Centralia.

Memorials may be left to St. Patrick Catholic Church or Nemaha County Home Health and Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, 814 Castle, Seneca, KS 66538.

Mary Meade was born March 3, 1939, in Centralia, to Andrew and Eva Lister Myers.  She attended Centralia Schools.  She married Ronald Meade June 27, 1956, at Coal Creek.  He preceded Mary in death May 18, 2003.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Corning.

For many years Mary worked as a seamstress at the Dress Factory in Onaga.

In 1999 she became a certified nurse’s aide and began working at Eastridge Care Home in Centralia, where she worked until she was diagnosed with cancer.

She is survived by four sons, Ron Meade Jr., Emporia, Bill Meade and Tim Meade, Centralia, and Tom Meade, Council Grove;  five daughters, Mary Keller and Diane Schmitz, Topeka, Martha Thompson and Bernice Ronnebaum, Centralia, and Liz Meade. Mesa, Ariz.;  26 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; her mother, Eva Savago Myers, Onaga; brothers, Andrew Myers, Temecula, Calif., Galen Myers, Wakarusa, Doug and Tony Meyers, Topeka; and sisters, Grace Correll, Onaga, Judy Ransdell, Linn Valley, Hazel Kerr and Sandy Wagner. Fulton, Mo. 

She was preceded in death by her father; her sister, Bernice Nolte; and two grandchildren, Jason and Paula Ronnebaum.

JoAnn Anita Melstrom

JoAnn Anita Melstrom, 80, Colorado Springs, formerly of Marysville, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011.

A rosary is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. at Parks Funeral Home in Greenwood, S.C., on Friday. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood, with the Rev. James Crowley officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oakbrook Memorial Park. Honorary escort will be members of the Knights of Columbus.

JoAnn Melstrom was born at Oketo, the daughter of George and Anita Koppes Bach, Marysville. She graduated from Marysville High School and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Catholic organization.

She married Bill Melstrom in 1952. They were long-time residents of Greenwood.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was an active member in Woman’s Club and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a seamstress and a crafter.

She lived her last seven years in Colorado Springs near her son, Doug, and his family.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Griffin and Barbara Yeager; her sons, Michael, John and Doug; sister Teresa Lehechka; brother Eugene Bach; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Roger; and a brother, Leo Bach.

Darlene Stolzer


Darlene Stolzer, 64, Washington, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at her home after a lengthy illness.

A funeral service was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Ward Funeral Home, Washington.

Darlene Della Allen Stolzer was born in 1946 at Lander, Wyo., the daughter of Jim and Della Lattimer Allen.

She graduated from Dubois High School and received a degree in nursing in 1971 at the University of Wyoming, Laramie. She was a licensed practical nurse for 37 years and a former emergency medical technician for Fremont County in the 1980s.

She married Ken Stolzer on June 16, 1995, and after living in Douglas, Wyo., and Thermopolis, Wyo., they moved to Kansas to live on his family’s farm.

She enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and rock hounding, playing bingo, collecting spoons and playing Canasta with her family. She also enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Robert Hiser, Greenleaf, and Bill Hiser, Lander; stepsons Collin Stolzer, Washington, and Chris Stolzer, Thermopolis; a stepdaughter, LaRee Schaaf, Carpentersville, Ill.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Della Allen, and stepson Kenneth “Bunky” Stolzer.

Reva Eileen Strange

Reva Eileen Strange, 81, Grove, Okla., formerly of Marysville, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.

A service was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Grace Presbyterian Church, Grove. The Rev. Teri Summers-Minette officiated.

Burial was at Shaw Cemetery, Erie.

Reva Strange was born Feb. 2, 1929, at Savonburg. She was the youngest child of H. Clyde and Edna M. McKinley Stanley.

She grew up in Erie and graduated at Chanute. She attended Chanute Junior College and then moved to Lawrence, where she worked at the University of Kansas business office.

She married Bill D. Strange on June 1, 1948, at the First Methodist Church, Chanute. They returned to Lawrence and then moved to Topeka, where she worked at the Washburn University business office.

In 1958 they moved to Marysville, where they lived for 29 years until their retirement to Grand Lake in Grove.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, and an active Red Hatter. In 1969, she was initiated in the P.E.O. sisterhood and served her chapters in offices including president. She was a charter member of Chapter GG in Grove.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Stan Strange, Colby; two daughters, Debbie, Muskogee, Okla., and Sheri Beck, Spiro, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.

Grace Walker

Grace Walker, 93, Harrison, Ark., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Hospice of the Hills House, Harrison.

A service was Thursday, Dec. 30, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home, Harrison. The Rev. Danny McMullen officiated.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dewayne Hudson, Clint Walker, Greg Umber, John Wray, Jeff Wisker and Pat Merrimen.

Grace Walker was born Dec. 11, 1917, at Bergman, Ark., the daughter of Willis M. and Lida Byrd Sands.

Survivors include her sons, Sheldon Walker, Harrison, Ivan Walker, Blue Rapids; a daughter, Karen Kimes, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loy J. Walker; her parents; a brother, John B. Sands, and a granddaughter, Michelle C. Hudson.

A memorial fund has been designated to Hospice.

Michelle Renee Warren

Michelle Renee Warren, 49, Beattie, died Tuesday, Jan. 4. 2011, at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Marysville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville.

Cremation is planned.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later by the family.

Gerald Wolfgang

Gerald Wolfgang, 85, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls.

Gerald James “Jake” Wolfgang was born May 24, 1925, in Beattie to Robert and Bess James Wolfgang.

He graduated from Beattie High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

He moved to Sioux Falls in 1948 and began working for John Morrell meat packing plant.

He married Rose Hawley Oct. 2, 1950, in Marysville.

He enjoyed hunting pheasant, deer and elk.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Wolfgang; children James Wolfgang, Lorna DeBoer, David Wolfgang and Karen Quam, all of Sioux Falls; sister Betty Ramsey, Concordia; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Harold, Edwin, Robert, Don, Howard, Jackie, Jacob, and four sisters, Beulah Larmore, Madeline Quick, Ruth Wolfgang and Shirley Wolfgang.
